Resources

If you’re looking to up your game, here are books, videos and sites to read with all kinds of useful links for food writers and bloggers.

Books for Writers

imgres On Writing Well, by William Zinsser. This is my favorite book about how to be a non-fiction writer. It’s no-nonsense, great advice.
imgres-1 Bird by Bird, by Anne Lamott. When I’m teaching, I always quote Lamott’s definition of the “shitty first draft” with affection. Brilliant.
imgres-2 Writing Life Stories: How to Make Memories into Memoirs, Ideas into Essays, and Life into Literature, by Bill Roorbach. Learn how to use fiction techniques such as setting scenes and developing characters. Use the exercises to fuel memories.
imgres Thinking Like Your Editor, by Susan Rabiner. If you’re planning to write a non-fiction book, you’ll be targeting editors in the book proposal. Read this to see how they think, and increase your chance of success.
imgres Talk Up Your Book: How to Sell Your Book Through Public Speaking, Interviews, Signings, Festivals, Conferences and More, by Patricia Fry. The subtitle says it all. Tons of good advice here for writers who are not experts at book promotion.
