About

D. Jacob.mug.web.2008When I was 5 years old, my dad told me that I would become a writer, and he was not the kind of guy to argue with. He gave me and my sister writing or art assignments, and the only one I remember is a poem I wrote about a frog with gastro-intestinal problems.

I went to journalism school and became a newspaper reporter, photographer, and newspaper section editor. My first magazine job was as editor of a city restaurant magazine in Vancouver. Then I moved to the US  and went to journalism school again, becoming the editor-in-chief of two magazines and executive editor of another. My last full-time job was as editor-in-chief of an electronic publishing company, Books That Work.

Since 1996, I’ve been self-employed as a writing coach, editor, writer and teacher. I missed working with writers so much that I became a writing coach, specializing in food. I’ve gone back to food writing, doing reviews, chef profiles, regular columns and recipes. And I’ve written two books: Will Write for Food: The Complete Guide to Writing Cookbooks, Restaurant Reviews, Articles, Memoir, Fiction, and More; and Grilled Pizzas and Piadinas,  co-authored with chef Craig Priebe.

Will you post about upcoming classes? I sure am interested. And Vancouver (that is BC?) is not too far…

I list them on my website and suppose I should list them here too. See http://www.diannej.com/ClassesandAppers.shtml

Hey, I’m from Kitsilano, now living in Oakland, CA. Small world, eh? (Got to put that “eh” in to indicate I’m a real Canadian.)
